The Constructs of Art & Time, or:

...getting a little philosophical before lunch.

Today at the studio, we were talking about the wood used in the GR pieces, where it comes from, and what it means to work so closely with these materials. I consider it an honor. "It isn't about time or what's old or what's new," I said. "Because time is made up." And the materials, warm and strong, we can hold in our hands.

In a Smithsonian Magazine article published two winters ago -- when the hunker-down and wait-it-out habits of the season (and time!) were in full swing -- writer Joshua Keating asked, how does time function in society? Anthropologists have concluded that not only is time a human construct, it is one that differs from culture to culture. From the theories of anthropologist Edward T. Hall:

"In monochronic societies, including Europe and the United States, time is perceived as fixed and unchanging, and people tend to complete tasks sequentially. In polychronic societies, including Latin America and much of Asia, time is more fluid and people adapt more easily to changing circumstances and new information." [emphasis mine]

Art is polychronic, but the craft of it is monochronic, I think. Working in the studio, I experience both senses of time. Art transgresses time, and art transgresses cultural understandings of time. Which is pretty neat.

In the studio, I use craft traditions established long ago, and also some of the newest technology. Lately, for instance, I've been experimenting with a 3D-printer, in order to find new forms and possibilities.

As process and technology evolve, our sense of time evolves, our sense of art evolves, and so too our connection with each other, citizens of the universe. When I look at something like the Signature Organic Coil bracelet, its ebonized white oak, its elegance and deceptive simplicity, I see all of this within it.

Art is a pure, pulsing thing within the complicated network of nature and all life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Now it's time to get a bite.

Form & Function

I'm coming out of a short period of creators block and really getting into the rhythm. Pieces like this are satisfying. Not only is this piece beautiful and elegant, but also maintains a perfect balance of form and function.

Of the mind, by the hand.

New Rings created as an addition to the Ad Idem Series.

The Ad Idem (Latin: "of the mind") Series is based on the idea of a collective of artists whose philosophies fall in line. The pieces in this series incorporate salvaged wood from Norm Sartorius, a woodworker who creates elegant wooden spoons. With this work, I access the collective unconscious and transform the wood into something new.

Outward Expression

I view adornments as being of the self. Adorning the self is a pure form of expression and I believe it to be a primitive instinct. The human desire to attach objects to the body that are beautiful, inspirational or symbolic is a way of taking the mind and expressing it outward. In doing so, we communicate with those around us.

The most rewarding aspect in creating is when those around me are deeply touched by what manifests from my own desire to express outwardly. When I stumbled upon this stunning image on Facebook, I felt instantly connected to the simplicity of the adornments and symbolism that it must contain. It parallels the philosophy that drives me each day to create art jewelry.

The image was posted on a Facebook page titled "Africa" - with a FB account you may view it here.

Home accents by Gustav Reyes - Contemporary Wooden Lamps

Wooden Lamp Arc Series by Gustav ReyesWooden Lamp Arc Series by Gustav ReyesWooden Lamp Arc Series by Gustav Reyes
Introducing home accents by Gustav Reyes. The work is infused with a deep appreciation for nature’s gift of wood. Each piece is created with the idea that the home is a sacred place and should be occupied by objects that enhance and enrich the space and its inhabitants. The GR Home Collection is imbedded with modern simplicity and incorporates contemporary techniques maintaining a good blend of both philosophies.

The GR home collection is made by hand in Chicago USA with FSC Certified wood. Environmentally conscious techniques are incorporated whenever possible. Through the material and creation of the work, Gustav Reyes considers the complexities of the cycle of life. He has a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty and rather than working against the grain, he works with it.

The GR HOME Collection will debut at the Handmade New York International Gift Fair, Aug 13 - 18.

Back from The American Craft Council Show - Baltimore

The American Craft Council Show in Baltimore went great. The new work went over better than I could have imagined. We picked up some of the best national galley representation around. I would like to thank Manuel Perez for her endless help in getting ready for the show.

living Life : Wood Art Jewelry at The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show

Unbound Wooden Brooch
I have said many times that I don't want life to live me, I want to live life. Last month I displayed my Wooden Art Jewelry at the The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show which is a premier show and sale of contemporary craft. I would like to say that life was on full display and for sale in the wonderful work. I was enthralled with the art lovers of Philadelphia and constantly reminded that the life I live is my creation. Thank you to the wonderful museum's Women's Committee and Craft Show Committee.

Reflection : A journey to my past and Philadelphia.

I will be departing for the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show this morning. I will be carrying a book that my father owned in 1975. I was just 7 years old when he owned this book. You ask what is the deal with this book well, my mother gave it to me yesterday as I was saying goodbye to her and my oldest son. The book is about jewelry making and the Art of jewelry. I was 7 years old when my father owned this book and 11 years old when he past away. I do recall many things about him, but seeing this book allowed me to reflect on the journey he was on. Likewise the journey I travel. I can not help but think that he would have been proud of me.

There is about twenty days till we leave for this years Smithsonian Craft Show in April in Washington DC at the National Building Museum. I can say that it is an honor to have been juried in to such a wonderful show but I feel that would be disingenuous. Words can not come close to what I feel. I have decided
